Robert A. Heifner has been serving in the role of Chief Executive Officer of St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital and Vice President of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System since July, 2012.

His tenure at CHI/St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital has resulted in improving the financial operations by $10M in 2 years.  He has successfully built the Sugar Land Doctors Group by recruiting seven employed physicians and the building of a Primary Care base for Sugar Land.  He opened the St. Luke’s Sugar Land Women’s Center in 2012 resulting in Women’s Services growth of 30%.  Cardiology and Cath Lab volumes have increased 45% in two years.  In 2012 the hospital was awarded the NRC Picker “Path to Excellence” for most improved hospital in Patient Experience.

Prior to joining the St. Luke’s Family, Mr. Heifner served for three years as CEO of Mainland Medical Center, a 223-bed acute care hospital in Texas City.

During his tenure at the HCA hospital, Mr. Heifner made significant strides in the clinical service line development including increased outpatient revenue and inpatient referrals with the development of a new Occupational Medicine Program; opened an Emergency Express Care clinic, an Intermediate Care Unit, and developed a new Thoracic Surgery program.

Under his leadership, Mainland Medical Center’s was awarded the 2011 “Top Hospital” designation for excellence in Core Measures and commended as a “Best Practice” for Emergency Department throughput by The Joint Commission.

Previous positions include Chief Operating Officer and Ethics & Compliance Officer for Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas; and Vice President of Operations at Tulane University Medical Center in Louisiana.

His varied community involvement include serving on the Board of Directors for the Fort Bend Economic Development Council, Board of Directors for the Texas City/LaMarque Chamber of Commerce, Galveston County Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America Bay Area Council Executive Board of Directors.
